WHY IS ANTARCTICA UNINHABITED?

external image WeddellSeal.jpg

Antarctica is the coldest place on earth and the reason Antarctica is uninhabited is because of the harsh climate and conditions. Very little plant and animal life exists and ‍the temperatures range from -89.2 degrees celcius to 10 degrees celcius. The highest speed of the wind can be as fast as 300km per hour.‍ The only inhabitants are the fauna/flora life and the scientist who stay there to do some scientific research, but they are not permanent residents.

‍There are no indigenous people in Antarctica unlike the Eskimos that occupy the Artic . There are multiple science facilities through out Antarctica which scientist occupy to research and discover the secrets of Antarctica‍. Sometimes scientist are able to discover/find the fossils of the extinct animals and new species of animals.Did you know that Antarctica is classified as a desert? This is because Antarctica is actually very dry and receives less rain fall than the Sahara desert!

Fauna in Antarctica include: Emperor Penguin, King Penguin, Chinstrap penguin, Macaroni Penguin, Adelie Penguin, Elephant seal, Leapord seal,Albatross,Blue Whale, Humback Whale, Krill, Fish,

Killer Whale, Crabeater Seal, lion seal, Orca, Weddel Seal, Gentoo Penguin, Rockhopper Penguin, Royal Penguin, Fur Seal and Blue Eyed Shag ( Jasmine)

‍‍‍Flora in Antartica includes:

Algae,Mosses,Liverworts,Lichens and Microscopic Fungi.

Plants such as Algae and Mosses can grow on/live on the snow and ice while others can grow

on the coastal rocky land. Some species of plants, such as Plankton,Algae and Moses live in or around the fresh and salt water lakes of Antarctica.

Fauna in Antarctica include:animals such as: Krill which are the basic food for most Antarctic animals, microscopic invertebrates such as: Rotifers, Tardigrades,Nematodes and Arthropodsinsects or parasites such as lice live on sea birds and Seals.Penguins:Emperor Penguin, Chinstrap Penguin, Adelie Penguin, Gentoo Penguin, King Penguin, Macaroni Penguin and Rockhopper penguins.Seals: Elephant Seal,Crabeater Seal,Weddell Seal and Leopard seals. Seabirds:Albatrosses, Shearwaters,Petrels,Cormoronts,Sheathbills,Skuas,Jaegers and Terns.Whales: Minke Whale,Right Whale,Blue Whale,Sei Whale,Humpback Whale,Fin Whake, killer Whale and sperm whales.Fish:Cod Fish ,Ice Fish,Plunder Fish and dragon fish. ‍‍‍(Leonie)

DID YOU KNOW?Did you know that the lowest temprature in Antartica is - 98 degrees!?.Did you know that a polar bear is not from Antartica, it is from the Artic‍!?.Did you know Antarctica is the 5th largest continent in the world, with an area of 5,400,000 sqaure mi or 14,000,000 square km.That makes it nearly twice as large as Australia, and about half the size of America.‍ That being said, one also has to make a note of the fact that this continent spans across 5,400,000 sq mi only when it is ice covered. In its ice-free state, Antarctica only spans across an area of 110,000 sq miles!?.
Did you know Antarctica is a continent without any country or citizens, and therefore doesn't have any government like the other continents of the world!?.
Did you know the continent of Antarctica, as we get to see it today, was formed as a result of continental drift over the course of millions of years. It was a part of the super-continent Gondwana, alongside South America, Africa, the Indian peninsula and Australia. As Gondwana disintegrated, its fragments drifted southwards, and thus came into existence the continent of Antarctica around 25 million years ago?. ( Jasmine)

Should There Be Tourism In Antarctica?

‍Negative

The majority of people believe that more tourism is bad for the Antarctica because when tourist go to Antarctica they will dump rubbish and then Antarctica will then be filled with filthy rubbish. (Jasmine)

It is foolish to deny that if tourism is allowed in Antarctica then the incresed amount of co2 in the air will keep all the suns radiation and heat waves inside our atmosphere. as a consequence of the increased heat the ice and snow in antarctica will melt, destroying wildlife habitats. (Luke)

Comon sense determines that tourism should NOT not be allowed in Antarctica as a result that tourists are damaging the habitats of many endangered species for their own needs. (Leonie)

I strongly believe that tourism should not be allowed in Antarctica because people can go fishing and that will increase the number of species that live in Antarctica. Once the populations increase people will soon realise that humans are destroying animal species. (Jasmine)

Affirmative

It is true to say that tourists should be allowed to go to Antarctica because families want to see Antarctic and when they go home they will past it on and more tourist will visit Antarctica. ( Jasmine)

This is a comment by Madison year 6

I did not know that the wind in Antarctica can go up to 300km per hour
